OSCE/ODIHR Training on combating sexual and gender-based violence
09-12-2016Course on effective response of law enforcement to sexual and gender-based violence was presented in Odesa on December 1-2 for participants from different regions in Ukraine working in the National Police as well as the educational institutions of the MIA of Ukraine. The training was organised by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) in cooperation with the EU Advisory Mission Ukraine (EUAM) and the La Strada Ukraine International Women’s Rights Centre.
The course main aim was to strengthen the capacity of investigators to identify, detect and prosecute gender-based violence and increase gender awareness among instructors in law enforcement institutions; participants were provided with expertise in forensics, criminal investigations and integrating a gender perspective into law enforcement operations.
EUAM Senior Adviser on Prosecution, Maarten Groothuizen, shared best practices of Dutch judiciary along with specification of investigative procedures, while Community Policing Training Officer Dmytro Melnyk organised a role-play training session on gathering forensic evidence in cases of sexual assault.
ОNational Academy of Internal Affairs was presented by Head of Administrative Law and Process Department Oksana Kuzmenko, associate professor of Administrative Law and Process Department Maksym Pluhatyr, Head of Legal Clinic «ZAKHYST» Nataliia Tsiupryk.
All knowledge and skills may be successfully implemented in training process – separate practical tasks and cases analyzed during the discussions can become a useful contribution to domestic violence prevention programs.
Members of Legal Clinic «ZAKHYST» will design a special manual with recommendations on gender-based violence prevention methodology for teenagers and young people and initiate thematic workshops to be launched in regions.
