The main tasks of the Institute are:

 to provide educational services for the training of higher education bachelors, masters and other full-time students for law enforcement bodies in the specialty 081 "Law" and for criminal police units in the specialty 262"Law Enforcement", as well as training specialists for higher education bachelor's degree (in full-time education) in specialty 081"Law", 262"Law enforcement", and 053 "Psychology" at the expense of individuals or legal entities;

 to conduct educational, research, organizational, cultural-educational, creative, artistic, sporting and recreational activities;

 to provide cultural and spiritual development of personality, to educate persons, enrolled in the Institute, in the spirit of patriotism and respect for the Constitution of Ukraine;

 to fulfill the requirements of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and the Academy administration on maintaining proper condition of the executive and ministerial duty, organization and order;

 planning, organization and guidance of the educational process;

 fulfillment of curricula and programs and monitoring their implementation;

 organizational support of teaching documents preparation;

 scientific study, analysis and evaluation of problems of Ukrainian criminal police and investigation departments practices; of best allied foreign agencies practices;

 the study of problems arising during the work of the investigation and criminal police departments;

 preparation of draft policy documents and legal acts regulating the activities of investigation and criminal police departments;

 the scientific expertise of the drafts on legislative and regulatory acts, state actions of socio-legal direction (on the special instructions of the Academy);

 publication and implementation of research results.

The Institute gives professional orientation for:

 investigative units;

 criminal investigation units;

 the units dealing with trafficking crimes

 the units of operational and technical measures;

 the departments aimed to combat cybercrime;

 units counteracting drug crimes;

 criminal analysis
